AT in New Jersey
to NJ 23
Dutch Shoe Rock
This section of the Appalachian Trail takes hikers from Sunrise Mountain to High Point State Park. This part of the AT features two shelters and the views from Dutch Shoe Rock. There are other views located at various points from along the trail on this section. Mashipacong Shelter was built in 1936 and sleeps eight with a privy nearby. The stone structure with a wooden floor has no water available near the shelter. The Rutherford Shelter is located 0.4 miles off the main AT and sleeps six. The shelter was built in 1967 and has a privy available. Water is from a nearby spring that is reliable and Lake Rutherford is within sight of the shelter.
We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.
Heading north bound, this section of the Appalachian Trail begins at the large and sometimes crowded Sunrise Mountain Parking Area. The GPS coordinates are N41 13.171 W74 43.042 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. There are rest rooms at the parking area, as well as benches and a view. The trail leaves the parking area and quickly descends. At 0.6 miles cross dirt Crigger Road. Cross a couple of stone walls and reach the top of a hill at 1.3 miles. Now the trail descends rather steeply at times, reaching the bottom at 1.45 miles crossing another stone wall. Soon cross the beaver dam outlet from the swamp on your right.
At 1.6 miles begin to ascend through mountain laurel. At 1.8 miles reach top of rise, start to descend. At 3.0 miles reach the Mashipacong Shelter. The AT turns left here and steadily descends with the help of recently added stone steps and water bars, reaching paved Deckertown Turnpike at 3.2 miles. Cross road and enter parking area. The parking area fits about 15 cars. The GPS coordinates are N41 15.148 W74 41.371 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. The trail exits the parking area in the corner and continues to descend. At 3.5 miles the trail turns right and ascends. At 3.6 miles the trail again turns right, following an old woods road. At 3.8 miles the AT crosses the red blazed Iris Trail and soon reach a trail register. At 4.3 miles cross a gas pipeline, which the trail maintainer has been brushing out to create a nice view.
At 4.7 miles the trail travels through a swampy area and then ascends. At 5.2 miles turn right on the red blazed Iris Trail. At 5.3 miles turn left off the Iris Trail. The Iris Trail continues straight toward Rutherford Shelter, however there is another trail off the AT that descends to the shelter. At 6.0 miles reach the views from Dutch Shoe Rock. A blue blazed trail on the right descends 0.4 miles to the Rutherford Shelter. This side trail was recently reconstructed with switchbacks to assist hikers with the descent. The AT continues along the ridge.
At 6.2 miles is a nice view. At 6.9 miles reach another nice view. Trail turns left and descends steeply. At 7.1 miles reach valley and begin to ascend. At 7.4 miles reach a view of Sawmill Pond. The trail turns right and follows ridge. At 7.5 miles the blue dot trail on left descends to Sawmill Pond. At 7.8 miles the AT crosses the red blazed Iris Trail and descends. At 8.3 miles reach NJ 23. Prior to reaching the highway you'll pass an unmarked trail that leads to a parking area for about 25 cars as well as the headquarters to High Point State Park. The GPS coordinates for the parking area are N41 18.276 W74 40.205 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. This ends this section of the Appalachian Trail.
