Wawayanda Mountain, Pinwheel Vista
For north bound hikers, this is the final stretch of the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey. This section of the AT features Wawayanda Mountain and a spectacular view point called the Pinwheel's Vista. The vista provides westward views of Pochuck Mountain and beyond to High Point Monument. The view gives north bound thru hikers one last opportunity to survey where they've been. For south bound thru hikers, this view gives you a chance to survey where you soon will be.
Because of the spectacular views from Pinwheel's Vista, you'll find many cars at the number of parking areas off NJ 94 for this popular hike along the AT. We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a couple of maps of this section of trail below.
Appalachian Trail approaching Wawayanda Mountain from NJ 94
This section starts as the AT crosses NJ 94 and travels through a parking area for the Appalachian Trail. There is parking for over thirty cars near NJ 94 at this very popular trail crossing. The GPS coordinates are N41 13.160 W74 27.310 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. The Appalachian Trail will ascend nearly 900 feet in 1.2 miles. The AT ascends along a grassy path and at 0.2 miles crosses a quarry road. At 0.4 miles the trail crosses an old stone wall and enters the woods. At 0.5 miles reach the base of Wawayanda Mountain, turn right and the trail follows the base of mountain. At 0.8 miles the trail turns left and ascends on stone steps. After a few switchbacks the trail passes by Annie's Bluff to the right.
Stone steps assist hikers in the steep ascent of Wawayanda Mountain
At 1.2 miles, after a steep ascent, climb a series of stone steps. At 1.3 miles reach the junction of a blue blazed trail on the left that leads 0.1 mile to Pinwheel's Vista. There spectacular views westward toward the Kittatinny Ridge as well as to the north with the Shawangunks and the Catskills. The Vernon Valley is below. Back on the main trail, the AT soon ascends more steeply.
After one last set of stone steps, reach the top of the 1338 foot Wawayanda Mountain. In a few hundred feet reach a trail register and soon after the junction of the blue blazed Wawayanda Ridge Trail on the right. The Wawayanda Ridge Trail leads 0.8 miles to a view point over Vernon Valley and Pochuck Mountain. From here the main AT meanders, crossing small streams, traveling near small waterfalls, crossing old stone walls and finally reaching Barrett Road at 2.8 miles. Parking is available for two cars near this trail crossing. The GPS coordinates are N41 12.877 W74 25.230 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. Turn right and follow Barrett Road for about forty feet then turn left into woods following an old woods road with an open field off to your left.
The trail will at times follow old woods roads and then veer off the roads. Watch the white blazes closely. At 4.0 miles turn right on Iron Mountain Road. Cross bridge over Double Kill. At 4.2 miles take grassy road on the right. At 4.4 miles reach crest of rise, now descend. At 4.7 miles turn left on dirt Wawayanda Road and at 4.9 miles turn right onto a woods road. At 5.1 miles reach a blue blazed trail on the right that leads 0.1 miles up to the Wawayanda Shelter. The shelter was built in 1990 and sleeps six. There is a privy close by.
At 5.5 miles cross paved Warwick Tpke. There is parking available for about ten cars at the trail crossing. The GPS coordinates are N41 12.087 W74 23.463 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. At 6.5 miles the trail turns sharply right and soon descends steeply briefly. At 6.9 miles reach Longhouse Road aka Brady Road and turn left, following the road.
There is parking for about four cars here and the GPS coordinates are N41 11.730 W74 22.296 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. The trail turns right off road in less than 0.1 mile. At 7.9 miles cross Long House Creek on a bridge, then ascend. At 8.6 miles reach a junction with the yellow blazed Ernest Walker Trail. The AT turns left here and at 8.9 miles reach the junction of the blue blazed State Line Trail and the end of this section. Welcome to the Empire State, New York.
