Steuben County is in the western part of Central New York State along the Pennsylvania border in the Southern Tier of the state.  The county seat is in Bath and the estimated 2008 population for the county was 96,573.  The highest point in the county is the 2401 foot summit of Call Hill located south of Hornell.  The county has numerous hiking opportunities in its numerous state forests and trails.

The county has major hiking trails that travel through the area.  The white blazed Finger Lakes Trail / North Country National Scenic Trail coincide as they pass through the county.  The Finger Lakes Trail travels 560+ miles from the NY/PA state line in Allegany State Park to the Long Path in the Catskills.  The North Country Trail is a 4600 mile National Scenic Trail that runs from North Dakota to Crown Point in New York.  Much of the trail is still under construction.

The Bristol Hills Trail is a branch trail of the 900+ mile Finger Lakes Trail System.  The trail winds over 50 miles from its northern terminus at Ontario County Park, through Naples, NY and on to it's southern terminus at the main Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail near Mitchellsville, NY.  The trail is marked with orange blazes and is a great long weekend or 3-4 day backpacking hike.

The Great Eastern Trail or GET is a new long distance trail currently under construction.  The trail will be 1800 miles long and will travel from Alabama to it's northern terminus near the Moss Hill Lean To in South Bradford State Forest at the junction of the main Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail.  The trail is being built in New York by volunteers from the Finger Lakes Trail Conference.  The NY section of the GET will become a branch trail of the 900+ Finger Lakes Trail System.

Stony Brook State Park and Pinnacle State Park are two state parks located in the county.  Urbana State Forest has numerous hiking opportunities including the Bristol Hills Trails as well as a state forest nature trail.  Birdseye Hollow State Forest has a nice day use area with picnic tables, fishing pier and hiking trails including the Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail as well as a couple of other trails.
