Hiking in Wayne County
|
Wayne County is located on the southern shores of Lake Ontario, east of Rochester and northwest of Syracuse. The county seat is located in Lyons. The Erie Canal travels the southern part of the county. The old Erie Canal opened in 1823 and the villages of Lyons, Newark, and Palmyra all became homes to canal locks. The old towpath is now a very popular hiking and biking trail in the county.
The highest point in Wayne County is an unnamed hill with an elevation of about 675 feet, located on private property near NY 21 and Creek Road. The 2008 estimated population for the county was 91, 564. The NY 31 corridor is popular due to the Erie Canal. On the northern part of the county, NY 104 is part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail.
The county is home to Trail Works, Inc., a not for profit organization founded in 1997 by individuals interested in trail development and expanding trail use. There are two state parks located in Wayne County, Chimney Bluffs and Beechwood. Both charge no admission to enter. The Montezuma Audubon Center and Blue Cut Nature Trails are popular hiking destinations in the county.
Parts of the 6304 acre Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area are located in Wayne County. In the southeastern section of the county is part of the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to check out Huckleberry Swamp and the rest of the Wayne County Trails Passport Program.
