Butternut Drive to Kirkville Rd

 


This six mile section of the Old Erie Canal Trail in Central New York may be the most popular section of the trail in the Syracuse area.  Don't expect to be alone if your planning a hike or bike along the trail.  Cedar Bay Picnic Area is located off this section of the trail in Dewitt.  There are large parking area's located at most of the road crossings. 

Be sure to check out the aqueducts at Butternut Creek and Limestone Creek.  There are also bridges over the canal that lead to the Butternut Creek Recreational Area, Cedar Bay Picnic Area as well as Green Lakes State Park, plus a bridge over the canal near Limestone Creek.  This is the Limestone Creek Trail, which leads to the village of Fayetteville as it travels along a feeder canal as well as the scenic Limestone Creek.

The Old Erie Canal Trail is a very level trail that is very easy walking or biking for everyone.  Look below for a few pictures and maps to help you plan your adventure on this stretch of the Old Erie Canal Trail.

There are five main parking areas located along the trail on this stretch of the Old Erie Canal Trail. Look below for info and GPS information on each parking area.
