Hiking in Jefferson County

Jefferson County is located in the northern part of Central New York. The county seat is Watertown and the county population is approximately 110,000. The northern part of the county borders Canada and parts of the "Thousand Islands" area is within the county as well as the St Lawrence River. The Black River is another popular location within the county. Part of the Tug Hill Plateau is in the southeastern part of the county. The highest point in the county is 1723 feet, located within the Tug Hill Plateau on private property near the Mad River.
One of the most popular outdoor activity in Jefferson County is snowmobiling due to the abundance of snowfall the area receives each year. Another favorite activity is boating due to Lake Ontario, plus the St Lawrence River as well. Hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing are all popular especially in Winona State Forest, Tug Hill State Forest and Robert Wehle State Park.
