The hikes featured in the Northwest region of the Adirondacks include hiking in the Cranberry Lake and Tupper Lake area.  This region is a bit more remote and not as crowded as other areas of the Adirondacks.  A couple of very popular backpacking loop hikes are the Cranberry Lake 50 and the 15 mile High Falls Loop.  Many of the hikes are located off NY 3, NY 56, NY 30 and NY 421. Cranberry Lake State Campground is a very popular camping destination and you'll find the trailhead for the popular Bear Mountain Trail there.  For those who don't need the amenities of a campground will find great primitive campsites off NY 421 along Horsehoe Pond in Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest. 

State lands located in the northwestern region of the Adirondacks include Pepperbox Wilderness, Five Ponds Wilderness, Watson East Triangle Wild Forest, Aldrich Pond Wild Forest, Grass River Wild Forest, White Hill Wild Forest, Raquette River Wild Forest, Cranberry Lake Wild Forest, Lows Lake & Hitchins Pond Primitive Area, Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest, Round Lake Wilderness and William C. Whitney Wilderness. We suggest looking at a good GPS devise such as Garmin eTrex 20 Worldwide Handheld GPS Navigator or a compass to help keep you on the right track.
